WHAT IS ART THERAPY?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses creative processes like drawing, painting, sculpting, collage and other artistic modalities to help people express themselves, explore emotions, and work through psychological challenges.

It's not about artistic skill—it's about using art as a way to communicate feelings that might be hard to put into words. A trained art therapist guides the process, helping individuals process trauma, manage stress, develop self-awareness and/or learn coping strategies.

Why Art Therapy?

Hard-to-express emotions: Some feelings are difficult to verbalize, especially after trauma or during intense emotional distress. Art gives a nonverbal outlet.

Comfort level: Not everyone feels comfortable talking directly about their issues—art can feel safer and more approachable.

Accessing the subconscious: Creative expression can tap into parts of the mind that aren't always accessible through conversation alone.

Sensory and hands-on: Some people process better through doing rather than talking—using colors, textures, and movement can be more engaging.

Inclusive: Art therapy can be useful for anyone. Folks of all ages and backgrounds can participate in the art therapy process because it is accessible, empowering, and personal-centred.

Creative Expression: Some people are simply drawn to expressing themselves visually- it’s healing to create, explore and reflect through art.
